Welcome to the Summer Sweet Diner

It's half past four, the offerings are a week past their prime; but the tables are still crowded, guests swarming around the flowery delights in the high ninety degree heavy warmth, tantalized by the thick heady fragrance of sweet liquorice lingering on the soft breezy air with a promise of yummy nectar to sip into the evening hours.  Stay too late and one may become dinner to another of the visitors that silently drifts through the hot night air on threads of silk looking for delectable delights fattened by sweet nectar from the Summer Sweet Diner.

  5. Not particularly fond of BUGS, especially the kind that sting. When i was a kid the empty cicada shells used to creep me out.

However, having said that, you have some very remarkable pictures there.

  6. You got some great shots of the pollinators. Your flowers seem alive and well with them a part of the show. Very beautiful!

  8. I am going to have to take a closer look at the mason wasp. Is it aggressive? We had something similar in appearance here last year and someone said it was an African wasp. Nasty looking thing!

  9. Sandra - I spent hours around these wasps, sometimes with the camera only inches away and they ignored me, and carpenter bees are fairly docile. There are other wasps here that are indeed much more aggressive.

Barbra - I've noticed the further south one goes, the bigger the bugs get, so you can keep yours all to yourself, lol.

Ruth - Veggies love flowers; and herbs, if you let them flower, attract all the smaller ground bees.

GB - Your super large red and black ant sounds like a Velvet Ant which is really a wingless wasp. They leave people alone. They always seem to be on a mission, walking very very fast across open areas.

kt - Cicada shells somehow have that effect on all people. Nothing's in there anymore, but it's like their ghost is still looking at you, lol.

Sage - Thank you so much. My gardens are alive with a zillion insects which makes a healthy yard, but I always joke with husband that if one sleeps overnight out there, they'll be ant food.

Mary - Thank you. I'm kind of partial to my kitties and doggie also :)

Shirley - My wasp is a Mason Wasp. I was around them for hours with the camera just inches away most times and they were more interested in the flowers than me. I looked up African wasps and it seems that is just a common name to call all wasps from Africa. There are many, many different types of African wasps and some of them look quite fierce. I happen to find wasps quite interesting, except when one is chasing me. I have only been stung once by one in my whole life, and that is just because it got caught between me and the back of my car seat. Nasty sting!

Great shots! I don't have a summer sweet bush. It certainly is popular with the insects!
